General Session

- Looking for Fraud? Start with the Most Trusted Person: The Five Fraud Schemes That Accounting Professionals Commonly Overlook

Robert Nordlander, Owner, Nordlander CPA, PLLC

Robert Nordlander

For over 20 years, Robert Nordlander was a special agent with IRS-Criminal Investigation, where he chased tax evaders and money launderers around the world. His investigations included drug traffickers, business owners, embezzlers, controllers, and return preparers. He has a CPA license and CFE credential. He is currently the owner of Nordlander CPA, PLLC, a boutique forensic accounting and tax resolution firm in North Carolina. Nordlander is also a 4x Amazon best selling author on criminal tax investigations and solving large IRS problems. He speaks nationwide on these topics, and his continuing education material is available nationwide on various CPE platforms.

Speaker: Robert Nordlander, CPA, CFE - Owner of Nordlander CPA, PLLC, Former IRS Criminal Investigator and Author

Fraud rarely starts with outsiders, complex schemes, or obvious red flags. More often, it begins with trusted employees, respected leaders, or long tenured insiders operating in environments where some controls exist, but skepticism quietly fades. This keynote challenges one of the most uncomfortable realities in accounting & auditing: the greatest fraud risks are usually closest to the people we trust the most.

He has presented for state CPA societies, professional associations, and university audiences, consistently earning top speaker ratings.

When he’s not dissecting accounting standards, Sean serves as an AI Transformation Champion for Crowe’s Audit Business Unit and is actively engaged in developing graduate-level accounting curriculum. He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and eight children.

Speaker: Sean C. Prince, CPA - Partner, National Office, Crowe LLP

Years have passed since the effective dates of the two most significant accounting standards of the past decade — and yet the comment letters keep coming, the restatements keep surfacing, and the “we thought we had this” moments keep happening in practice. This session cuts straight to the hard stuff: the implementation traps, judgment calls, and technical landmines in ASC 606 and ASC 842 that continue to trip up even sophisticated preparers and their auditors.

Through a series of worked examples drawn from SEC comment letters, National Office consultations, and real-world practice, we’ll dissect the thorniest areas of both standards — principal-versus-agent determinations, performance obligation identification and allocation, lease modification accounting, termination scenarios, and the often-misapplied sale-leaseback rules. Whether you’re in public accounting, industry, or somewhere in between, you’ll leave with sharper judgment on the issues that keep showing up — and the tools to handle them.
