Railroad Museum of New England

Not-for-Profit Organization: Railroad Museum of New England

Position: Director on the Naugatuck Board of Directors

Position Description: The museum board is seeking to recruit someone with solid financial experience who would bring business acumen and best practices oversight to the Naugatuck Railroad.

Background: The museum owns and operates the Naugatuck Railroad. The Naugatuck Railroad is a freight company that also provides vital excursion train services for the museum. The museum is the one and only shareholder of the Naugatuck Railroad. Both organizations are economic and social drivers to the upper Naugatuck Valley area.

The museum, located at the historic Thomaston Train Station, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. It is an all-volunteer, educational and historical organization that dates back to January 1968. The Naugatuck Railroad is a for-profit corporation.

Both organizations are experiencing growth but, along with growth, comes growing pains. The museum is evolving smoothly with sound budgeting and financial controls. However, the Naugatuck Railroad not only recognizes that it needs to upgrade its business policies and economic management to deal with its burgeoning freight business but also recognizes that it needs to expand and strengthen its board of directors to do so.

Estimated monthly time commitment: Four hours
