business owners, small nonprofit or-
ganizations, and qualified individu-
als in Connecticut with accounting,
tax,andfinancialmanagementissues
throughCommunityAccountingAid&
Services(CAAS).
CAAS frequently provides assistance
and information regarding business
organization, accessing governmental
agencies, tax filing requirements, set-
ting up appropriate record-keeping
systems,andfinancialmanagement.
In several communities, CPA volun-
teersuseCAAS'bookStarting a Small
Business in Connecticut
toteacheve-
ning classes on just that: how to be
an entrepreneur in the Nutmeg State.
Courses normally include four two-
hour sessions and are conducted in
thefallandinthespring(afterApril15).
CAASiscurrentlyofferingthecourses
inCheshire,Glastonbury,Middletown,
New Britain, Norwich, Plainville, Wall-
ingford,Waterbury,andWolcott.CAAS
hasPowerPointpresentationstoassist
instructorswiththepresentations.
CAAS volunteers provide a helping
hand to new business ventures by
challenging their owners to address
the issues involved in transforming
goodideasintogreatbusinesses.The
organization also provides assistance
tononprofitorganizationsbyconduct-
ing training for board and staff mem-
bersonaccountingprocedures,inter-
nal controls, understanding financial
statements,andpreparationforaudits.
CAAS volunteers also assist with the
preparation of IRS Form 990 returns
forqualifiedorganizations.
ThroughitsaffiliationwiththeCommuni-
tyEconomicDevelopmentFund(CEDF),
CAAS volunteers instruct the four-ses-
sion evening courses "Understanding
Business Financials and Business Tax-
es." Courses are designed for existing
smallbusinessesthathaveorseekmi-
croloansfromCEDF.Thesecoursesrun
twotothreetimesperyearinBridgeport,
East Hartford, Meriden, Milford, Nor-
wich,Stamford,andTorrington.
WewelcomeCTCPAmemberstojoin
themanyCAASvolunteerswhomake
adifferenceintheircommunities.While
workingonCAASassignments,CAAS
volunteersarecoveredunderavolun-
teerliabilityinsurancepolicyprovided
