Technology Gets Real(time)
NottoolongagoIdidsomethingI'veneverdone
before­Ileftmyhusbandandtwoyoungchil-
drenathomeandtookoffforalongweekendin
Napa Valley, CA with my college girlfriends. In
thedaysbeforethetrip,Icouldn'tbelievethatI
hadactuallyagreedtogothatfarawayfrommy
littleones.Thankstomysmartphone,though,I
quicklydiscoveredthat,despitethesix-hourplane
ride,Ineverreallyfeltthatfarawayfromhome.
WiththechimeofatextoraFacebookpost,Iwasabletoseemyhusband's
snapshotstakenmomentsbefore­frommythree-year-oldinthefleeceleop-
ard-printpantssheinsistedonwearingdespitethe80-degreeweathertoher
littlebrothermakingagleefultripdownabouncyhouseslide.Withthehelpof
anappcalledLife360,IwasabletoseeviaGPStrackingwhentheywereonthe
roadtoabirthdaypartyandwhentheyarrivedhomesafeandsound.
Of course, this real-time technology isn't only useful on the homefront. At
therecentCTCPAEssentialEvent(page25),Iwasfascinatedtoseespeaker
DanGrosssellcopiesofhisbookwiththehelpofasimpleiPadcreditcard
processing app, even taking authorization signatures right on the screen.

At the It's Just LIFE: Kickoff to Life event (page 12), several panelists
described how mobile devices are their lifelines to help them morph spare
momentsintoproductivemoments,fromemailingonaniPadbetweenason's
lacrossegamequarterstofiringupamobileWiFilaptopforafewhourswhile
ridinginthecartovisitadaughteratcollege.
Icanclearlyremembernotowningacellphoneatall,andnowIcan'timagine
adaywithoutit.It'samazinghowquicklytechnologyentersandthenchanges
thewayweliveanddobusiness.Ifyou'reinterestedinlearningmoreabout
